There is a seasoning – measure, measure, measure

instaquote-08-07-2014-15-27-49As much as I LOVE the act of cooking (and subsequently eating the delicious morsels I have prepared) I am not immune to debilitating laziness. I will often go grocery shopping with good intentions and leave food sitting in the fridge unprepared for the effort that is required to turn it into something more. But the most deterring activity of the entire preparation is honestly measuring out seasonings.

When I did the Whole30 (twice) I discovered a number of REALLY tasty recipes that I never get tired of making over and over again, but several require me to measure out no less than eight different seasonings and Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That. So I decided to prevent the laziness brought on by measuring by measuring out several batches of my favorite recipe seasoning blends in advance and storing them in these tiny mason jars (because I am *really* trying to cut back on how many zip lock baggies I use).

I bought some of the tiny mason jars and I try to buy my most-used ingredients in bulk to save some moolah since I seem to go through them so quickly (I’m looking at you chili powder from the Caveman Crockpot Pulled Pork Rub). So now whenever I pull out a recipe that I know I am going to make again and again, I take an extra few minutes to measure out additional servings so that in the future, laziness over measuring can’t be my excuse!

So, here are the two seasonings I use the MOST!

Taco Seasoning

PhotoGrid_1395802175049For use with one pot of Crockpot Chicken Tacos, or one skillet of taco meat!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp ground coriander
  • 3/4 tsp onion powder
  • 3/8 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 t arrowroot powder, tapioca flour or cornstarch (for thickening)

Sage Sausage Seasoning

Mix in with 1lb of ground turkey, chicken or pork! I prefer to sprinkle it in while it is cooking, but you can also gently mix into your meat and let it cool in the fridge for a bit to let the flavors absorb!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp ground sage
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • dash red pepper flakes
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1 tsp dried marjoram

Plan-less Meal Planning

Sometimes when we make the decision that we are going to start eating healthy, we dive right in, instead of getting our feet wet and acclimated to the change. Thus: Plan-less Meal Planning. They say when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. But planning takes time, and our desire to jump in often… Continue Reading
